What's going on with RCMP?

Letter writer asks what's wrong with the Mounties.

Editor, The News:

I'm responding to the article in The News about the latest incident involving an RCMP officer being arrested. (The News, Aug. 3).

Unlike others, I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon and criticize this officer.

There are many problems within this organization and that is clearly evident. It's just now starting to come to the surface.

But what is more important, and we should be asking the question, why are so many officers getting into these situations?

What are the stressors?

Is it because of what they've experienced in their work place, i.e. the RCMP and their own heartless bureaucracies and commanding officers?

I think this latest incident is just one more example of a deeper underlining problem within the force.

They have actually identified this in the Task Force study, "Rebuilding the Trust" – in the year 2008.

What remains to be seen is what have they done to really change this culture within the force.

The real question should be, 'What's going on within the force, and can it be fixed?'
