Who knows what Conservatives will be looking for?

John Munro says Lawful Access legislation makes law abiding citizens out to be criminals

Editor, The News:

I see Minister of Public Safety Vic Toews believes Canadians who do not support the new Lawful Access Legislation are, therefore, supporting child pornography.

I remember hearing the same sort of blanket statement from George Bush: ‘If you are not with us, you are with the terrorists.’

By that reasoning. Mr. Toews and the Conservatives must be in favour of the following: ‘Supporting criminals by getting rid of the gun registry; ‘Supporting torture by allowing the information gained from torture to be used no matter how reliable the source’; or ‘Canada’s open for business, so torture away.’

The police can always get the warrants they need to start eavesdropping on Canadian citizens who may be doing something illegal. I see this as just the beginning of going after anyone they feel is expressing any view that is different from their’s.

Who’s next, environmentalists, the person sending an e-mail like the businessman in Quebec a few weeks ago who was arrested and had his house searched because of certain words he wrote? Maybe you might have visited a website they don’t like. Who knows what they will be looking for?

It makes law abiding citizens out to be criminals.
