Ridge Meadows Flames had two guys in the hunt for a scoring title in their last game of the season on Sunday night.

In that last game, Nicholas Amsler and Ryan Denney both needed five points to tie Chilliwack Jet Caleb Garret’s 82 points.

In a 10-4 full-court press against the Abbotsford Pilots, Amsler finished with two goals and three assists, and his linemate Denney got two of each. Amsler finished up the season with 24 goals and 82 points in 44 games, to tie for the league scoring title.

Right behind him was Denney, with 47 goals and 81 points in 44 games, which is good for third.

GM Derek Bedard believes the team hasn’t had a player atop the Pacific Junior Hockey League scoring race since the 1990s.

“It was a pretty special night,” he said.

They have played together through their minor hockey careers in the Ridge Meadows association, and been Flames teammates for 120 games.

“There’s a lot of built-in chemistry with these guys,” said Bedard.

“They’re more focused on the team goals, but it was great to see them get those individual successes, because they’re great people.”

They start a best-of-seven playoff series against the Chilliwack Jets that will start on Wednesday night, 8 p.m. at Cam Neely Arena. Game Two is scheduled for another Flames home tilt on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
