The weather was cold, wet, and miserable, but that didn’t deter more than 100 cyclists from taking part in the second annual Barry’s Roubaix cycling race in Pitt Meadows on Sunday.
However, more than half the field didn’t finish the race, as the wet and muddy conditions persisted.
The race, organized by Maple Ridge’s Local Ride bike shop, is modeled after the famous Paris Roubaix race, which has taken place on the same day in France for more than 100 years.
Curtis Deardon of the Garneau Evolution Team topped the men’s Category 1/2 race with a time 3:17:52, followed closely by teammate Tim Abercrombie.
Maple Ridge-based Local Ride Racing Team member Rich Machhein was the top local finisher, at 15th.
Jasmin Glaesser of the Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods+ team took the top spot with a time of 3:05:42 in the women’s Category 1/2 race, followed closely by Denise Ramsden in second, and teammate Jessica Hannah in third.
Maple Ridge’s Jean-Ann Berkenpas was fifth, while Local Ride member Jenny Lehmann was sixth.
James Cameron of Pro City Racing took the top spot in the men’s Category 3/4 race, with a time of 2:08:02, while teammate John Rogersz finished second, just 41 seconds behind.
Ryan Newsome was the top local racer in 18th.
Tannille Stickley was first in the women’s Category 3/4 race, while Keith Jackson and Allison Wood were tops in the novice men’s and women’s categories, respectively. Finn Blackburn won the U-17 division.
Local Ride’s next local race is the ninth annual Race the Ridge Cycling Stage Race, May 7 and 8.
The three-stage road cycling race features a lung-busting 22 km time trial through Golden Ears Provincial Park, a road race through Thornhill, and the high-speed Town Core Criterium, where hundreds of cyclists will take over the streets of downtown Maple Ridge.
