Carol Skanks has been honoured for her decades of volunteer service to the Maple Ridge Boxing Club.

Carol Skanks was chosen as the first winner of the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year in B.C. boxing.

She and her husband John got involved with the Maple Ridge Boxing Club in 1980, and have been contributors to the sport for more than 30 years since then.

Former Boxing Canada president John O’Shea was glad to see her recognized, calling Skanks “an unsung hero,” and a “true volunteer.”

He said the club produced national champions and medallists with John at the helm, and Carol in a supporting role.

Even now, after John has suffered a stroke and is in hospital, Carol has continued helping to run the club, often up until late at night with her obligations to it.

The trophy she received is the Jim Gallagher Memorial, named for a boxing official with more than 40 years service.
