Bruins beat kats

The Ridge Meadows Bruins men’s third division rugby team beat Kats 29-18 at Balaclava Park on the weekend.

The Ridge Meadows Bruins men’s third division rugby team beat Kats 29-18 at Balaclava Park on the weekend.

“They are a talented team with a good combination of older, experienced leaders and younger, fitter players,” said Bruins coach Paul Stanfield. “In the past, we’ve fallen to the Kats.”

After scoring three early tries, the Bruins were pinned in their end for close to 50 minutes, just barely holding on to the lead.

In the last two minutes of the game, and ahead by only a single point, the Bruins scored two breakout tries, one by Stanfield and the other by Josh Ladd, that sealed the game in their favour.

The win was critical. The Bruins need to be victorious in every game from this point onward to secure a spot in the altered playoff structure.

• Saturday they are at home at Thomas Haney field against top-ranked Burnaby Lake side. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
