The Ridge Meadows Burrards peewee girls’ lacrosse team is provincial champion after going undefeated at the tournament last weekend in Port Coquitlam.

The Burrards opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over Burnaby on July 7, before edging Coquitlam No. 2 by a score of 3-2 on Friday.

The Burrards blanked Port Coquitlam in their third game of the tournament on Saturday morning, before making short work of Coquitlam No. 1 later that afternoon, winning 8-2.

That set up a rematch with Coquitlam No. 2 in the gold-medal final. The Burrards once again came out on top, winning 5-2.

The Burrards’ Megan Stewart was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Stewart was also a recipient of the Pee Wee Warrior Fair Play Award.

In the peewee A1 boys’ competition, the Ridge Meadows Burrards finished in second place, falling to Coquitlam 7-4 in the final.

The Burrards opened the tournament with an 8-5 win over Coquitlam on Thursday, before edging New Westminster 7-6 on Friday. On Saturday, Ridge Meadows defeated Juan De Fuca 14-8 to set up a rematch with Coquitlam in the gold-medal final.

However, it was Coquitlam that came out on top as the Burrards were forced to settle for silver.

Goalie Nathan Faccin received a Pee Wee Warrior Fair Play Award at the tournament.

Five members of the peewee A1 Burrards squad will be representing B.C. at the 2011 Commissioners Peewee National Championships, beginning July 31 in Whitby, Ont. Chris Armstrong, William Clayton, Dylan McIntosh, Dayton Vidovich, and Faccin will all be making the trip back east.

Team B.C.’s midget squad will also feature a pair of local players: Brett Kujala and Joe Olson. Both players are members of the Ridge Meadows Burrards midget A1 team that will be competing for a provincial championship July 20 to 24 in Coquitlam.

At the girls’ lacrosse nationals, Regan Eaton will be a member of the provincial midget team, while Megan Kinna will be part of the bantam team.
