Close to 150 cyclists braved the damp weather in their Halloween costumes for the sixth annual Pumpkin Cross cycle-cross race, held at the Maple Ridge Equi-Centre on Sunday.
The race was sponsored by Maple Ridge’s Local Ride Bike Shop, and took cyclists from across the province on a loop of the North Alouette River Greenway.
Cyclo-cross is a muddy hybrid of on-road and off-road cycling that occasionally requires cyclists to dismount and carry their bikes over obstacles.
Andrew Pinfold took the top spot in the elite men’s race, followed by Kevin Noiles and Kevin Calhoun.
In the elite women’s race, it was Leah Goulein who finished first, while Jean An Berkenpas and Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods+ racing team’s Sandra Walter finished second and third, respectively.
Benjamin Schmidt won the intermediate men’s race, with Jason Rhodes in second, and Dave Collins in third. Maple Ridge’s Maggie Coles-Lyster, of the Local Ride Racing team, was first in the intermediate women’s race.
Susanne Nagy won the beginner women’s race, while Shawn Kingerlee won the beginner men’s.
Kim Steed won the over-40 race, followed by Rick Rodland and Cory Forrest, while Kian Zandy won the U-17 race.
