Many of B.C.’s best junior golfers were in Pitt Meadows last weekend as the Meadow Gardens Golf Club hosted the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour.

This 2023 MJT Maui Jim Series tournament took place on June 3 and 4, with 88 golfers between the ages of nine and 18 competing across several divisions.

After the two days of golf, athletes from both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows found themselves in podium positions.

In the U15 girls division, Elsa Wu, 13, played nearly identically to Port Coquitlam’s Jennifer Zou, with both players finishing at +17, tying them for second place behind Surrey’s Kathleen Dunn.

Cassie Zhiyi Chen, 13, from Maple Ridge, also competed in the U15 girls division, but finished just shy of a top-10 spot, with a final score of +27 to put her tied for 11th place.

For the Bantam boys division, Pitt Meadows’ own Jaden August, 14, got off to an early lead thanks to his three birdies in the first nine holes of the tournament. August was able to hang onto this lead for the rest of the tournament, finishing in first place with a +3 score.

“Winning always feels great,” said August. “My mental game and pre-shot routine helped me win this week.”

Ethan Smail, 17, almost got Maple Ridge another top-three finish, but was unable to outplay Nanaimo’s Samuel Kurytnik in the Junior boys division. Smail ended one stroke behind the Vancouver Island teen for a fourth-place finish with 14-over-par.

The next B.C. stop for these young golfers will be the MJT Ford Series at Rivershore Golf Links in Kamloops, which runs from July 17 to 18.
