Flames open jr. B playoffs Sunday in Delta

The Ridge Meadows Flames open the Pacific Junior Hockey League on Sunday in Delta against the Ice Hawks.

Game 1 is at 7:30 p.m. at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

Game 2 is Tuesday, same time and place.

Game 3 is Friday, Mar. 23, 8 p.m. at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge.

Game 4 is Sunday, March 25, 4:45 p.. at Planet Ice.

Game 5, if necessary, is set for Monday, March 26 in Ladner, 7:30 p.m.

Game 6 is set for Wednesday, March 28 in Maple Ridge, 7:30 p.m.

Game 7 is set for Thursday, March 29 in Ladner, 7:30 p.m.

The Flames advanced to the PJHL championship final for the first time since 1998 with a 5-2 win Saturday at home over the Abbotsford Pilots.

The Flames won the Harold Brittain Conference finals 4-1.

Delta won the best-of-seven Shaw Conference final 4-1.

Delta finished first overall in the regular season with 77 points. The Ice Hawks’ goaltending tandem of Jordan Naylor and Jordy Engleson topped the PJHL in goals-against average and save percentage. They allowed just 79 goals all season, 45 fewer than the team with the next least.

Delta also led the league with 237 goals for, for a plus-158 differential.

The Flames’ goal differential was plus-49, good enough to lead their conference.

The Flames went 0-4 against the Ice Hawks during the regular season, but three of those games were close, including a 3-2 defeat in their last meeting.

Jordan Deyrmenjian led Delta in scoring with 31 goals and 69 points in 31 games.

Gary Dhaliwal had 18 goals and 53 points in 42 games for Delta, while Jonathan Rees recorded 20 goals and 50 points in 41 games.

Flames captain Andrew Strelezki led the junior B team in scoring with 18 goals and 52 points in 43 games.

Halen Cordoni had a team-high 32 goals, as well as 15 assists in 34 games, while Cameron Kovesdi added 11 goals and 42 points in 38 games.

Delta had the league’s fight best powerplay (18.81 per cent), and ranked first in penalty killing ((90.23)

Ridge was sixth in powerplay (16.81) and eighth in PK (82.04).

Both teams enter the final with a plus-15 goal differential in the playoffs.
