The Haney Neptunes finished in the top 10 in B.C. Summer Swim Association 55th annual provincial championships in Coquitlam with strong showings in the pool, waterpolo and synchronized swimming.
The event wrapped up Aug. 18 and the Neptunes ranked 10 out of 61 clubs that took part in the event, said Anthony Cowie, president of the swim club.
“We’re very pleased with how our season played out,” said Cowie, who has two of his own kids in the program. “We had set out a goal of finishing in the top 10, so it was nice to see that through. But there is always room to improve.”
The Neptunes wrapped up the summer taking home one gold, three silver and 10 bronze in the pool.
In the girls division 1, Emma Benoit, Rebecca Smith, Robynn Reid and Mina Edwards swam to gold in the 200 metre medley relay in a time of three minutes and 15.75 seconds. The team shaved close to a full second off its qualifying time of 3:16.72.
The foursome followed with a bronze medal showing in the 200 m freestyle relay, finishing in 2:55.
The Neptunes’ Ava Morant won silver in the girls division 4 category, taking home the medal in the 100 m backstroke in 1:13.19. Morant captured her second silver with a time of 29.03 in the 50 m freestyle.
She won bronze in the 100 m freestyle with a time of 1:04.89, a vast improvement over her 1:07.24 qualifying time.
In the girls’ “O” Cat 2 division, the Neptunes’ Julia Rosec won three bronze medals, taking home the hardware in the 50 and 100 m butterfly, as well as the 100 m backstroke.
Rebecca Todd won a bronze in the girls division 6 category for the Neptunes, capturing the medal in the 50 m freestyle with a time of 28:50.
The 200 m freestyle team of Joel Blanco, Jack Hayhoe, Declan Lee-Chin, and Dale Longmuir swam to a silver medal in the boys 2 division.
The team finished with a time of 2:23.34. Hayhoe, swimming third, helped his team win bronze in the 200 m medley. He was joined on the team by Greg Adams, Ethan Benoit, and Luke Watson.
The boys division 1 medley team also won a bronze in the 200 m event. Dylan Adams, Alexander Preocanin, Jordan Longmuir and Dean Blanco finished with a time of 3:26.01.
In the boys 7 division, Nicholas Todd won a bronze in the 50 m butterfly with a time of 27:57, while in division 8, the team of Kevin Dee, Nate Stein, Matt Torres, and Cole Wagner won bronze in the 200 m medley in a time of 1:52.57.
