Junior B: Flames fall 3-2 in overtime again

Still lead first-round series 3-2, host Mission on Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The Ridge Meadows Flames, for the second straight game, missed out on eliminating the Mission Outlaws, falling 3-2 in overtime again.

The local junior B hockey team lost in the same fashion to the Harold Brittain Conference leaders on the weekend, but remain up in the first-round playoff series, 3-2.

Game 6 will be played Friday at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge, 7:30 p.m.

The Flames led 2-0 after two periods Tuesday in Mission on power play goals by Cameron Alder and Bradley Crompton. Boston Colley assisted on both. Nolan Ferguson also picked up a helper.

Mission, however, scored twice in the third, then Brody Dyck converted a rebound 14 seconds into overtime.

Mission outshot Ridge 50-33. Jason Sandhu made 47 saves for the Flames.

Flames head coach Bayne Ryshak attributed the loss to a bit of inexperience. The Flames had chances early and converted on a few of them, he said, but then sat back and played tentative, trying to protect the lead.

“We went into a bit of a shell and it cost us,” he said.

Still, Ryshak added, the players remain confident. He’s told them not to worry about the past two games, but to focus on playing the way that gave them the lead in the series – keeping it simple, rolling four lines.

And when they get the chance, “put the final nail in the coffin.”

Playing at home Friday, where they are comfortable, he said, should help.
