Knights open season at Round Table tourney

The Meadowridge Knights community football program kicked off their 2011 season with their annual Knights of the Round Table tournament last weekend at the Albion Fairgrounds.

In all, 26 teams from throughout the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan participated in the two day event.

The tournament began on Saturday with seven teams competing in the Atom Division. Cloverdale took first place by winning all three of their games, while both the Meadowridge atom Blue and Gold teams played well.

Six teams competed in the Junior Bantam Division, including two teams from Kelowna. The Meadowridge Knights finished first, winning all three of their games while not allowing a single point to be scored against them throughout the tournament.

North Surrey won the Peewee Division with a record of three wins against only one loss.  Royal City had the same overall record, but was edged out for top spot based on points scored against. The Meadowridge Gold and Blue teams both had strong performances.

In the Bantam Division, North Surrey took the title by going undefeated. Their closest game was against the Meadowridge Knights. The game was scoreless until Surrey scored a touchdown in the dying minutes of the game.

This exhibition tournament was the first competitive action for most of the teams. The teams have two more weeks of practices and exhibition games before the regular season starts on Labour Day weekend.
