He’s known for the past two years where his future lied, but the reality of signing his university letter of intent really hit home for one of the nation’s top junior golfers.
Pitt Meadow’s Kevin Kwon officially sighed his letter of intent to play at the University of Washington in the Fall of 2013, and the humble senior from Maple Ridge Secondary School said he was surprised by the emotion of the event.
“I’ve know for a while now that I was going to do it, but when it became official it was kind of sudden,” said Kwon. “Once I signed those papers it really hit home.”
Kwon has been a rising star on the junior Canadian golf circuit, first servicing notice with an 11-shot win at the Canadian Junior Championships At Morgan Creek in 2011.
The Swan-e-set member in Pitt Meadows said that win, followed by representing Canada on the national junior team, have been the highlights of his your career.
He said he’s looking forward to making the transition to the NCAA and playing in the PAC-12 conference.
“The program at Washington and coaches are very excellent,” said Kwon, who will follow in the footsteps of his former teammate Charlie Hughes, who is in his senior year with the Huskies golf team. “I’m just grateful for the opportunity. I’ve had lots of support from my family and coaches, so it’s worked out real all for me.”
Kwon said he plans a busy summer of tournaments leading up to the start of the season, including another run at the Canadian national title. Shortly after signing with Washington Kwon was named as one of six players to the Canadian national men’s development team. This will be Kwon’s second season with the program and he said he’s thankful for the chance.
“The last seven years have been fantastic. I’m lucky to be surrounded by so many supportive people.”
