Lady Bruins blank Velox

The Ridge Meadows Lady Bruins blanked Victoria’s Velox Rugby Club 36-0 in women’s Division 2 action on Saturday to improve to 3-1 in league play.

The game remained scoreless throughout much of the first half when the Lady Bruins exploded for three tries late in the half to break the game wide open.

Though trailing 17-0, the Velox team pushed hard to get on the board early in the second half, pinning the Lady Bruins deep in their own end.

The Bruins’ defence held, however, and drove down the field to score another try to take control of the game.

Scoring for the Bruins were Dawne Granholm with three tries, while Allison Granholm, Lindsay Hill and Alexis Cloete each scored a single try. Larissa Chatt had two converts, while Granholm had one.

The win puts vaults the Lady Bruins past Velox into second place in the Langara Fishing Adventures Division 2 standings. The team has out-scored its opposition 89 to 61 so far this season.

The team has a bye this coming weekend, but will be back in action on April 2 to take on Burnaby on the road. The Bruins next home game is April 9 at Thomas Haney secondary at 10 a.m.

The Lady Bruins invite any women interested in playing rugby to come join them for a practice to find out what the game is about and to meet the team. The team practices Wednesdays at Westview secondary at 7:30 p.m.
