Local gymnasts shine

A number of local gymnasts ascended the podium at the Zone 3 Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Vancouver last Friday. More than  80 gymnasts took part in the event, which is a qualifier for the provincial championships held in Victoria this June.

Maple Ridge’s Amelia Helmus placed first all round in the Level 2 Novice Division, taking the top spot in the free, rope, and ball routines. Diana Bitoiu won silver with second place finishes in the free and ball routines, and third in the rope routine. At Level 2 Junior, Taylor Scoular placed second all-round after getting top marks in the free and rope routines, and placing third in the ball routine. Keira Leyland was third all-round, while Mitra Teimouri was fourth. In Level 3 Novice, Viktoria Fabbro finished fifth all-round. Local gymnasts Mikayla Bruendl, Kennedy Krause, Jenna Little, Hannah Scoular, and Erika Bernard be competing at the B.C. National Stream and Westerns Stream Individuals and Group Championships, April 9 and 10.
