Local teams start slow in valley basketball playoffs

All four local teams lost their first-round games at the senior boys’ basketball Fraser Valley AAA zone tournament.

All four local teams lost their first-round games at the senior boys’ basketball Fraser Valley AAA zone tournament on Wednesday.

At Rick Hansen secondary in Abbotsford, the Pitt Meadows Marauders lost a close game with the North Delta Huskies by a score of 61-58, and the Westview Wildcats were downed by Delta 78-57.

At Guildford Park in Surrey, the Maple Ridge Ramblers lost to the Brookswood Bobcats 67-60, while the Thomas Haney Thunder lost to the host Guildford team.

All four teams were still in action on Thursday, and the 16-team tournament will see four teams advance to the provincial championships.

The junior boys’ basketball championships were held at Pitt Meadows secondary over the weekend, with Lord Tweedsmuir beating RE Mountain by a score of 73-34 in the championship game.

Terry Fox beat Heritage Woods 54-30 in the bronze-medal game.

The host Marauders beat Enver Creek 71-38, but lost to Guildford Park 50-48 and were eliminated.

The Maple Ridge Ramblers were beaten by North Delta 78-24, and the champion Tweedsmuir team beat Samuel Robertson Technical 90-30.

The Pitt Meadows Marauders lost to Abbotsford Traditional 45-23 in the bronze-medal game of the Grade 9 Fraser Valley tourney on Saturday.
