Maple Ridge swim club comes third in local meet

The Haney Neptunes was among eight clubs across the Lower Mainland to compete

The Haney Neptunes placed third overall at a swim meet in Mission over the weekend that brought together clubs from across the Lower Mainland.

Eight teams took part in the Mission Marlins Invitational that ran all day both Saturday and Sunday at the Mission Leisure Centre.

Brooklynn Brekke of the Neptunes tied for first overall in girls overall rankings with 120 points – along with Sienna Saunders of the Mission Marlins, and Kacey Jance Caranoo of the Chilliwack Stingrays.

Brooklynn set a new club record for the 50 backstroke, swimming a time of 37.53 and breaking the former record set by Melanie Dodds in 1999 of 38.50, noted Elaine Costa director of swimming with the Haney Neptunes.

“Brooklynn said she felt fast in the water. And she pushed through the pain on the second length to finish fast. She hopes to repeat as provincial champion this year,” added Costa.

Brooklynn had the fastest time of 36.29 in the girls division two 50 freestyle earning her the maximum of 20 points. She also placed first in the division two 100 IM with a time of 1:27.50. In both categories she was followed by Neptunes’ Jordyn Munroe who placed second with a time of 37.51 in the 50 freestyle and 1:36.77 in the 100 IM. Brekke placed first with a time of 40.97 for the 50 butterfly in her division, first for the 50 backstroke with a time of 37.53, first for the 50 breaststroke with a time of 45.89, and first for 100 freestyle with a time of 1:20.32.

Neptunes’ Maggie Escaravage came ninth overall with 100 points, tying with Eliza Haig of the Marlins. And Julia Longmuir of the Neptunes placed 16th with 94 points, tying with Amarra Sandhu of the Abbotsford Whalers.

Sofia Maria Povazan would place first in the girl’s division three 100 freestyle with a time of 1:15.03, second in the 100 IM with a time of 1:26.62, and third in the 50 butterfly with a time of 38.32. Airi Cowie third in the division five 50 freestyle with a time of 31.79. Ava Yip placed second in the division four girls 200 IM with a time of 3:09.76 and third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:37.47. Annabel Povazan came second in the division one 50 backstroke with a time of 55.05 and Julia Longmuir placed second in the division five 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:29.26, third in the division five 100 backstroke with a time of 1:18.81, and third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:07.18.

For the Neptune boys, Cole Brekke, placed sixth overall with 111 points, followed by Joshua Povazan in eighth with 105 points, and Vincent Costa in ninth with 103 points.

Cole placed second in division one 50 freestyle with a time of 45.58. He also placed first in his division for the 100 IM with a time of 1:55.96, second for 50 butterfly with a time of 1:06.29, first for 50 backstroke with a time of 50.22, first with a time of 58.95 for 50 breaststroke, and second with a time of 1:44.31 for 100 freestyle.

Breslin Nilsson placed third in the boys division two 50 freestyle, as well as the 50 breaststroke with a time of 50.48, and third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:30.36. Vincent Costa placed first in the division six 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:19.27, second in the boys division six 200 IM with a time of 2:37.27, and second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:15.31, as well as the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:17.62, and second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:02.68. Cruz Costa placed third in the boys division four 200 IM, Tiago Costa placed third in the boys division two 50 butterfly with a time of 58:18, Josiah Hestermann placed third in the division six 50 butterfly with a time of 32.08 and third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:20.46. Noah Leeman came second in the boys division four 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:31.23

Overall, the Mission Marlins came out on top with 4,960 points, with the Abbotsford Whalers Aquatic coming second with 3,650 points, and the Haney Neptunes with 2,237 points.

“Our swimmers all looked great over the weekend,” exclaimed Costa. “Four of our swimmers won the Aggregate Award. Great start to our summer season.”

The next meet is a home meet, and Costa expects they will have more swimmers competing. The Haney Neptunes Invitational will be hosting seven other swim clubs from the region and Costa is anticipating more than 300 swimmers and their families.

“We are expecting to see faster swims and our swimmers beat their personal best times,” she said.

The top three at the Mission meet were followed by:

• Chilliwack Stingrays

• Aha Swim Club

• RiverMonsters Swim Club

• Aldergrove Sea Monkeys

The Haney Neptunes Invitational 2023 takes place this weekend, June 3 and 4, at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre.
