Two former Maple Ridge Ramblers who are now wrestling for the Simon Fraser University team won gold on the weekend.

Former Rambler Ryan Hicks, a freshman this year, won his weight class with a pin on Saturday in Oregon City.

The SFU men’s team won both its dual matches, including one over the three-time defending National Junior College Athletic Association champions. SFU opened the day with a 32-18 victory over Southwestern Oregon Community College. Then the team earned a 20-16 triumph over host school Clackamas Community College – who won the last three junior college national championships and hasn’t lost a home dual since 2014.

Next up for the Simon Fraser men is the NCAA Super Region 6 Championship in Grand Junction, Colorado, on Feb. 26.

With the women’s team, freshman Marquessis Haintz captured the 59 kg. title as her squad won the University of Alberta’s Golden Bear Invitational Tournament on Saturday in Edmonton.

SFU won five of the 10 weight classes at the meet, which was their first of 2022. They also had three second-place finishes, to win the meet handily with 67 team points – 28 more than their Albertan hosts in second.

Next weekend, SFU will be in the San Francisco Bay Area. The team will take part in the Menlo College Duals on Friday in Atherton. On Saturday, the wrestlers will compete in the Menlo Women’s Open.

The SFU women’s team entered the 2021-2022 season ranked fourth, and have finished second at the national championships in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
