Meadow Ridge Knights open season with wins

The Meadow Ridge Knights opened the 2012 Valley Community Football League season in fine form last weekend, with five of six local teams scoring a victory.

The Knights midget squad upset the No. 1 preseason team, the North Delta Longhorns, 20-7 on the road to earn the team and it’s new coaching staff its first win of the season.

Brendan Atkinson and Tanner Hartley each rushed for a touchdown, while quarterback Trevor Casey hit Joe Schuster for a 40-yard touchdown pass.

The Knights’ defence was led by the pressure from defensive ends Matthew Chichka and Elijah Goerzen and linebackers Brett Boyce and Mark Kalmykov.

The midget Knights return home this Saturday as they host the Vernon Magnums at Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary School.

Drake Kindred led the way for the junior bantam Knights with a touchdown off the opening kickoff as they defeated the Mission 9ers 30-22. Kindred also ran back an interception for a touchdown later in the game. Brandon Hunt had a pair of TDs, scoring on amassing play, while running for another.

The Knights’ special teams were led by kicker Jake Loftus, who converted on three of four attempts. The  offensive line of Angus MacDonald, Andrew Grimason, Mason Reeves, Anthony Cameron and Jack Kuris also had a strong game.

The junior bantam Knights host the Abbotsford Black Falcons this Saturday at home at SRT.

The Meadow Ridge Knights peewee Gold Knights defeated the North Langley Bears 33-0 on the road.  Leading the Knights’ shutout defence were Jay Sachar and Blake Alford with interceptions, while Eric Clark ran back an interception for a touchdown. The Knights offence had a strong game running behind the blocking of Daruis Joseph, Jaidon Scott and Will Bartolo. Cade Cote rushed for three touchdowns and Brock Pelwecki added another. The Gold Knights play their club rivals the Meadow Ridge Blue Knights this Saturday at home.

The peewee Blue Knights, meanwhile, lost 19-6 to the Mission 9ers last weekend. The team’s defence was led by linemen Justin Nickel, Nathan Barr, Alex Trostheim, Avery Fitchett, and Declan Fitzpatrick, who controlled the line of scrimmage, making it hard for Mission to run the ball inside. The offence led by quarterback Tyler Spencer and running backs Evan Vasarhely, Liam Cumarasamy and Brayden Hamilton, who put together numerous long drives. Brayden Hamilton scored the lone touchdown for Meadow Ridge.

The atom Knights were also in Mission last weekend, where they lost 13-12 to the 9ers.

However, the Knights still registered a win for the game after the 9ers forfeited, according to the Valley Community Football League website.
