The Vancouver Northeast Chiefs scored an upset, come-from-behind victory over the Greater Vancouver Canadians on Saturday before being on the losing end of one the next day.

The Chiefs downed the Canadians 5-4, overcoming a 4-2 deficit early in the third period in a B.C. Major Midget Hockey League game played at UBC on Saturday. The teams traded goals in the first period with Maple Ridge’s Matthew Bissett scoring for the Chiefs. The Canadians took a 3-2 lead after two periods, with defenceman Daniel Del Bianco getting Northeast’s goal. After Greater Vancouver increased the lead to 4-2 in the third, Tyler Martin and Bissett scored with just over 12 minutes remaining to set the stage for Jamie Waddington’s winning goal with 2:16 left. Del Bianco also had three assists, as did Matt Allan.

On Sunday, Bissett and Joey Santucci scored for the Chiefs as both teams notched a pair of goals in the first period. Trevor Sutton and Jacob Wensley increased Northeast’s lead to 4-2 in the second period, but in the third the Canadians scored four times to improve their record to 20-8-4, putting them third in the 11-team league. The Chiefs are sixth at 11-12-7, six points behind fifth-place South Island Thunderbirds (14-11-7), but with two games in hand, and two points in front of the Okanagan Rockets (12-15-3).

This coming weekend the Chiefs will play host to the 10th-place Kootenay Ice (6-18-6) at Cam Neely Arena. Saturday’s game begins at 4 p.m. with Sunday’s starting at 10 a.m.

Bissett is the team’s top scorer with 19 goals and 34 points, which ties him for 12th in the BCMML.
