Pitt girls going to B.C. finals

The Pitt Meadows Marauders AA senior girls’ soccer team is off to the B.C. high school championships next week after finishing in the top three at the Fraser Valley finals last week.

The Marauders lost 1-0 to 2010 provincial champions Burnsview Griffins of Delta in the final game of the Fraser Valley championships last Wednesday. Coach Mike Oldridge said the Delta team provided difficult competition for his squad.

“They beat us 4-0 last year in the Fraser Valleys, so this was an improvement,” he said. “They are a very strong team, they did not give us a lot of chances.”

The Marauders will enter the provincial tournament as the No. 2 Fraser Valley seed, which will mean the team will likely get an easier draw than last year, when they were the No. 3 seed from the Fraser Valley. The Marauders ultimately finished in seventh place last year at the 16-team tournament.

“We’d like to improve on last year’s result,” said Oldridge. “I don’t think making the top four is out of reach for us.”

The provincial finals take place June 2 to 4 at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex in Burnaby.

The Pitt Meadows Marauders senior girls’ soccer team is made up of Nikki Stanley, Melanie Manson, Lindsay Macdermid, Becky Jenkins, Chanel Naiker, Linnea Foster, Melissa Knebelow, Briana Morrison, Lexi Turner, Amanda Ward,  Kelsey Acaster, Nicole Foster, Tam Reiss, Steph Patricelli, Emily Gresham, Alysha Rasmussen, Alex Lewis, and Payge Pena.
