Three of the Ridge Meadows Bruins Rugby Club’s teams were in action this past weekend, during the opening week of the B.C. Rugby Union fall season.
The Ridge Meadows Lady Bruin’s team kicked off Saturday morning at home against the Tri-Cities United Rugby Club, dominating the visiting side 48-5.
Bruin’s tries were scored by Dawne Carver, Bri Railian, Lindsay Hill, Larissa Chatt, Katie Zadorozny, Erin Fox, and newcomer Rachel Spinelli scored during her first time playing the sport.
The next test for the Lady Bruins will come next Saturday against Burnaby Lake Rugby Club.
The Ridge Meadows Bruins men’s team faced the powerhouse Capilano RFC of West Vancouver. The first half saw the Bruins backed into their own end, but the team put on an impressive defensive display and managed to make it to half time down by a single try.
In the second half, the Bruins fitness took over and the team rallied with 17 points to give the team a 17-13 victory. The Bruins tries were scored by Josh Ladd, Rob Hughes, and Rogan East brought in the game winner. Additionally, Reed Nelson scored on a conversion kick. Next up for the Bruins is the Meraloma Athletic Club of Vancouver.
The Ridge Meadows Bruin’s U-17 Boy’s squad closed out the weekend for the club losing 40-14 in exhibition action to the Tri-Cities United Rugby Club. The Bruins got off to a slow start, but were able to tighten up on defence in the second half.
Millar Thind and newcomer Marlin Reehl scored the team’s tries. Thind also proved valuable with his feet, going two-for-two on conversion kicks.
The Bruins men and women’s teams practice at Merkley Park at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings, and 7:30 p.m. at Westview Secondary School on Thursdays. New members are always welcome.
