The Maple Ridge Ramblers AAA senior girls’ basketball team are one win away from securing a return trip to the provincial championships.

The Ramblers were to have faced the Walnut Grove Gators Thursday night at WJ Mouat secondary in Abbotsford. A win in that game would ensure the Ramblers of at least an eighth place finish at the Fraser Valley championships, and a berth at the Telus B.C. High School AAA Girls’ Provincial Championships, held March 7 to 10 at Capilano University.

The Ramblers are the No. 10-ranked AAA team in the province and finished league play in the Fraser Valley Tier 1 Division with a 6-3 record. The Gators, meanwhile, were 0-9 in league play, but advanced to the championships with a 68-59 win over Fraser Heights on Tuesday.

The Ramblers won their opening game of the Fraser Valley regional qualifiers on Monday with a 59-51 win over the WJ Mouat Hawks. The Ramblers fell 68-65 to Yale secondary, the No. 9-ranked team in the province, on Tuesday.

Maple Ridge can finish as high as fifth at the Fraser Valley championships, which continue until Saturday, Feb. 25. Should the Ramblers beat Walnut Grove Thursday, they would face the either Delta or Fleetwood Park secondary school.

Pitt girls upset MEI

Pitt Meadows Secondary School’s senior girls’ basketball team advanced to the championship round of the Fraser Valley AA tournament with an upset 41-23 win over the Mennonite Educational Institute Eagles on Friday.

The unranked Marauders finished the regular season in the AA Fraser Valley North league with a 6-3 record, while MEI are the No. 9-ranked AA team in the province and finished the regular season with a 9-1 record in the Fraser Valley Central league.

Pitt Meadows opened the qualifying round with a 65-28 win over DW Poppy secondary on Thursday.

Thanks to their 2-0 record in qualifying, the Marauders earned a bye through the first round of the Fraser Valley championships, held Wednesday night.

Pitt Meadows was to have faced GW Graham Thursday night in their first game of the championship round.

The top four teams at the tournament advance to the B.C. High School AA Girls’ Basketball Championship in Kamloops next month.
