Pitt Meadows resident Katie Stanoffsky and Maple Ridge’s Bayley Bird made a little ringette history last weekend.

They and the rest of their Lower Mainland U16 AA ringette team traveled to Edmonton to compete in the prestigious Woods Tournament. They came home with gold after downing Calgary 8-2 in the final game.

Their team, the Lower Mainland Thunder, went a perfect 5-0, outscoring their opponents from Alberta and Saskatchewan by an aggregate score of 37-11 over the three-day tournament.

It was just the second time in the 26-year history of the tournament that a team from B.C. has won gold, and the first time in the U16 division.

The Thunder consists of the top U16 players from an area stretching from Abbotsford to Richmond. They will be traveling to Fredericton, N.B. in April to compete in the Canadian championships.
