Sports briefs: Hockey registration extended

Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association has extended registration for returning players due to a large number of families missing the original deadline.

Registration for the 2011-2012 season will now remain open until Saturday, May 7. However, payment must be received within seven days.

The association is also currently accepting coaching applications for rep teams.

Applications can be submitted to Doug Strangward at dtstrang@telus.net by May 15th, and must be accompanied by a proposed yearly plan.

Midget lax girls on winning streak

The Ridge Meadows Burrards midget girls’ lacrosse squad picked up two road wins this past week.

On Sunday, Kianna Henry scored her first goal of the season in a 3-1 victory against Langley.

A strong defensive game and team effort advanced the Burrards to a 6-3 win over Burnaby on Monday, with Kassidy Dryborough responsible for a pair.

With a four-game winning streak now, the team travels to Nanaimo on Saturday for an exhibition game.

In mini-tyke action, Ridge Meadows Team 1 played a hard-fought match against Ridge Meadows Team 4 on Saturday. Josh Bettesworth led Team 1 in scoring, while Grace Foley was strong in net. Tough defence by brothers Evan and Ewen Patrick made sure it was a close, competitive game.

Gabriel Smith of the Team 4 Canucks was named player of the game.

Flames host fundraiser

The 2001 Junior Flames hockey team is organizing a bottle drive on May 15 to help provide team development ice time and training.
