SPORTS BRIEFS: Maple Ridge jiu jitsu tots shine

On Sunday youths representing the far corners of the Lower Mainland descended on Maple Ridge

On Sunday youths representing the far corners of the Lower Mainland descended on Maple Ridge to take part in the first annual West Coast Combat Championship’s Kid’s BJJ tournament at West Coast Martial Arts.

The number of participants was overwhelming, with kids representing all the major teams from across the region. Maple Ridge’s own West Coast Martial Arts was well represented, with many local young athletes bringing home medals.

Tyson Deane-Freeman, age three, and Elijah Williamson, age four, from Maple Ridge, both received gold medals. In both cases martial arts runs in the family, as their fathers are high ranking senior instructors at the local club

Another big surprise was Thomas Jung’s and Harrison outstanding performance. Both of them competed in the nine year divisions and showed great Jiu-Jitsu and sportsmanship as they both fought hard to beat their competitors. Jung won gold while Harrison, after only training a few months, was able to clinch Silver.

Flames lose to Kodiaks

The Ridge Meadows Flames lost 4-1 in Aldergrove in Wednesday night’s Pacific International Junior Hockey League action.

On Friday the local junior Bs host the Port Moody Black Panthers at 7:30 p.m. at Planet Ice.

The next night, they will play in Abbotsford, taking on the division-leading Pilots at 7:30 p.m. at MSA Arena.

Football group AGM

The Meadow Ridge Football Association will be holding its annual general meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 at Thomas Haney Secondary School at 7 p.m.

Great year at SFU

Maple Ridge’s Alex Rowley had a great year with the Simon Fraser University Clan men’s soccer team.

The Clan became the first Canadian school to reach the NCAA Final Four, after having won their third consecutive GNAC Championship with a 19-2-1 record.

The Clan led the conference in goals, assists, points, corners, goals against average, shut outs and they allowed the fewest number of goals.
