Sports expo one-stop shop for parents

If you’ve ever wondered what sports are available for your kids in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, the first-ever Sports and Recreation Expo is the perfect place to find out.

There will be 26 local sports organizations taking part in the expo, which takes place at the Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28.

Booths will be set-up to showcase the multitude of sport, recreation and sport funding organizations in our communities. There will also be interactive demonstrations, activities, prize draws, and an opportunity to register for youth sports programs.

The event is being organised by Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure Services in cooperation with the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Sport and Outdoor Recreation Council.

“We found that many community members don’t know what recreation opportunities exist locally other than baseball, soccer, and hockey,” said organizer Joanne Georgelin, with parks and leisure services. “So we wanted to open the event to all the different groups and organizations here.

“We’re hoping this event grows exponentially in the years to come.”

Getting kids involved in sports at an early age has positive health benefits for them when they become adults, Georgelin.

“We know that if we can get kids involved with youth sports, they are more likely to stay active for life,” she said.

The event is also great place to discover what resources exist for low-income families.

“Maybe you can afford the registration costs, but can’t afford the gear,” said Georgelin. “There’s organizations that can help with that.”

The event is free for the public to attend.
