Sports shorts: THSS grad Mallo honoured

Maple Ridge’s Lauren Mallo has been named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference’s West Division all-academic team after posting an impressive 3.15 GPA in her second-year biology program.

Mallo plays defence for the Buffalo State College Bengals women’s hockey team, and scored 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in 24 games with the Bengals this season.

Mallo, who graduated from Thomas Haney secondary, was one of 10 Bengals to receive the honour.

 

Campbell competes for NCAA title

Maple Ridge’s Kelsey Campbell and her Indiana University Hoosiers are set to compete for an NCAA national water polo title this week after knocking off the No. 6-ranked University of Michigan to advance to the eight-team championship tournament in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Hoosiers, seeded No. 6 in the eight-team field, open up the tournament against No. 3 seed UCLA on Friday, at 4:30 p.m.

Indiana enters the event with momentum after ending the season with wins in 23 of their last 26 contests, including five victories against teams ranked among the nation’s top-16 squads.

 

Burrards ranked 7th in Canada

The Ridge Meadows Burrards are ranked seventh among senior men’s lacrosse teams in the country going into the 2011 Western Lacrosse Association season.

The Burrards are the fourth-ranked WLA team on the weekly LacrosseTalk National Rankings, slotting in behind the New Westminster Salmonbellies (No. 2), Victoria Shamrocks (No. 4), and Coquitlam Adanacs (No. 5).

The Burrards went 9-9 last season, making their first post-season appearance since 2005.
