Students at Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary School took to the streets of Kanaka Creek last week to compete in the sixth annual Titan Tough Duathalon.
Students first completed a running course at the Albion Sports Complex, followed by a bike ride through the Kanaka Creek area.
The winner in the boys’ category was Grade 12 student Colton Kirki, while Grade 11 student Sydney Connor won the girls’ event.
All senior physical education classes at SRT participated this year, which made for a very competitive race, says athletic director Lesley McPherson.
“The event had a real community feel to it,” she said. “Even the preschoolers from next door at Cottonwood Daycare at Planet Ice came down and cheered on their favorite Titans.”
Students trained for five weeks prior to the race, which included a day spent racing up the Grouse Grind in North Vancouver.
“We have really been hammering home the idea of ‘Raising the Bar’ with our students this year,” she said. “We want them to set their goals high, and be willing to work hard to accomplish them. This group really out did themselves, we couldn’t be prouder.”
Race organizer, and physical education teacher Jason Hampton said he was very proud of the whole group’s effort.
“The coolest thing about this experience for these kids is the pre-race nerves and reservations are replaced by the massive sense of accomplishment they feel completing something they thought the couldn’t do,” he said.
