Strong runs, but no medals at cross-country provincials

Several local athletes had good performances, but there were no medals as the B.C. high school cross-country championships were held in Kelowna on Saturday.

Fraser Valley champion Liam Foster of Pitt Meadows secondary ran fifth. He  finished the 6.7 km course in a time of 25:27.

There were 222 competitors who averaged 30:39 on the course.

Jamie Hennessey of Maple Ridge Secondary was the fastest senior girl from the district, finishing 17th out of 223 participants and her time of 19:55 on a 4.5 km course being considerably faster than the 23:16 average.

The fastest local in the junior girls category was Ilse Rafter of MRSS, who finished in 20:46 and in 16th place out of 197 runners.

Marshall Shupe of Maple Ridge Secondary, who is an elite short track speed skater, was the fastest local junior boy. He finished 36th in a time of 18:32. There were 202 participants who averaged 20:17.
