Back-to-back shutouts highlighted the opening day of the World Junior A Hockey Challenge at the Langley Events Centre.

Canada East goaltender Adrian Ignagi got things started by turning aside all ?? shots he faced against the Czech Republic on Monday afternoon.

Randy Gazzola and Tyson Spink scored 2:15 apart late in the first period and Justin Danforth extended the lead to 3-0 after 40 minutes.

Gazzola notched two more third-period goals for the first-ever hat trick by a defenceman in World Junior A Hockey Challenge history.

Devin Shore finished with two assists.

The tournament’s second game featured the three-time defending champion United States taking on Sweden.

And with overtime looming, Ludvig Nilsson scored with six seconds remaining for the 1-0 victory.

Projected NHL first round pick Oscar Dansk was sensational in the Swedish net, stopping all 44 pucks the Americans fired his way.

Day two of the championships features the Czech Republic (0-1) against Russia (0-0) at 4 p.m. in Pool B action while Sweden (1-0) takes on Canada West (0-0) at 7:30 p.m. in a Pool B game.
