More than 2,000 students took part in School District No. 42’s primary and intermediate cross country runs this week.

The intermediate classes kicked off the week on Monday, Oct. 23 as an estimate 700 students flocked to Golden Ears park for the first leg of the event.

Andrew Lenton, one of the organizers for the event, said both had strong numbers despite the stormy weather that led up to the races.

“Normally we would be closer to a 1,000 intermediate runners, but the heavy rains and windy conditions prior to the race probably kept some kids from training for the event,” said Lenton.

He said the weather certainly didn’t keep dampen the spirit at either event. More than 1,400 students took part in the second leg of the event, the primary portion.

He said with teachers, family and friends pouring into Albion Sports Complex to cheer, the crowd was an estimated 4,000.

“It’s a great atmosphere for the kids. The weather gods were really looking out for us. There’s so much enthusiasm that it makes it such a fun event. The kids really enjoy it.”

He said part of the event’s strong turnout is based on its longevity.

The school district cross country runs have been going on for more than four decades, said Lenton.

“We have third-generation runners taking part in the event. It’s has a long history with people in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.”

Lenton said the event at the primary level doesn’t keep track of winners, rather the goal is to encourage participation.

At the intermediate level, the goal is team oriented, he said.

The top four runners from each team are awarded points based on when they cross the finish line. The team with the lowest total takes top honours.
