A night of arts and fundraising is returning to Garibaldi Secondary School next week as the students and staff prepare to host the second annual arts night open house event.

Interdisciplinary Arts Academy director Sharmila Miller said that the inaugural event last year was a big success and she hopes that this year will bring even more money into the program.

“This event began last year as a collaboration effort between all of the arts teachers and students,” said Miller. “The evening showcases creations from students in culinary, visual arts, film, music, dance, and theatre programs.”

Whitney Mullens, who teaches in the school’s arts, drama, and dance programs, explained that the event was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the talent of the students.

“We have such an abundance of talent at this school,” said Mullens.

“This night gives friends and family an opportunity to witness and celebrate the hard work and dedication it takes to be successful in the arts. It is a moment to embrace vulnerability and creativity, as they often go hand-in-hand.”

The evening will include demonstrations and performances from the school’s various artistic programs, with all of the money raised going toward funding future arts and culinary projects at Garibaldi Secondary.

Teacher Michael Hanlon called last year’s arts night open house incredible and said he is very much looking forward to seeing what the students have in store this time.

Anyone interested in local arts will want to attend this event, said Miller.

“With these students putting so much time and effort into the creation of these arts pieces, it is amazing to be able to see the wide range of talent, as many create art in more than one area,” she said.

Admission is by donation, with doors opening at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 25.
