Just like the women-only sections in gyms, there will soon be a judgement-free and welcoming space for women on the golf course thanks to the efforts of groups like SheGolfs.

This Lower Mainland company was created with the goal of providing a safe and inclusive environment for women to pursue their love of golf without feeling judged, explained founder Kristy Roberts.

“I started it as I found myself wanting to golf with other women and I had no idea how I could network with others of all skill levels,” said Roberts.

One of the ways that the group does this is by hosting events like the first annual charity golf tournament, which is set to take place on May 23 at the Golden Eagle Golf Club.

This event isn’t limited to just golf aficionados either, with Roberts saying that females of all skill levels and ages are encouraged to participate.

“I want women to know that there are other women out there that are always looking for women to golf with,” said Roberts.

The former Maple Ridge resident has been an avid golfer for quite some time and was thrilled by the growth that SheGolfs has accomplished in such little time.

“My goal for SheGolfs is to continue to host tournaments and other social events around the surrounding areas of Vancouver so women from all areas of Greater Vancouver, including Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, can connect with other women in golf.”

And even though SheGolfs is set out to help female golfers, Roberts sees no reason why she can’t also use the group to help other individuals as well.

That’s why she’s decided to give half of the proceeds from the charity golf tournament to KidSport Tri-Cities, which provides grants and discounted sporting goods so that kids can afford to play sports.

“Sports are an integral part of kids’ lives,” said Roberts. “It teaches them discipline, determination and how to get along with others.”

“By supporting us and helping us raise funds for KidSport, we are giving kids the opportunity to pursue their passion for sport and help shape them into confident, engaging, and caring youth in our society.”

The tournament has space for 144 players, and Roberts hopes to see as many smiling faces as possible on May 23.

“Come out and have some fun with like-minded people, build a network of golfers, and support a great cause by giving back to KidSport,” said Roberts.

Tickets for the event are $160 per person, which includes 18 holes, a cart, a burger, beer, and fries.

There will also be a 50/50 draw. The tournament will end with some networking over a meal for the players.
