Eight awards for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News

Three first-place finishes, one for second, two for third.

The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News collected eight awards in the 2012 Local Media Association editorial contest, among the most in its circulation class.

Colleen Flanagan, a photographer with the News, earned three awards. She won for best photojournalism (A day to remember) in class C (non-daily, circulation 16,001-36,000). She placed first (In control) and second (Bright night) for best feature photo in the same class.

Robert Mangelsdorf, a former reporter with the News and now editor of another Black Press publication, earned first place for best sports writing (An inspiration without the ‘I’).

Monisha Martins, a reporter with the News, came third for both best in-depth reporting and best feature writing (The comfort of Sonia’s Cradle). She also earned an honorable mention for best breaking news story (Teen pleas for rave witnesses; ‘Innocent until proven guilty’).

The News also earned an honorable mention for best special section (Our Community, Our People).

The Local Media Association (formerly Suburban Newspapers of America) represents more than 2,100 suburban and community newspapers and their digital products across the U.S. and Canada.
