Celebrate Canada's 149th birthday on Friday.

Pitt Meadows will celebrate Canada Day in Spirit Square community park, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday.

It starts with the Lions Club flipping pancakes for their annual breakfast.

Next on the schedule at 9 a.m. is the annual Athletes in Kind Kids Charity Run. This year it will not include an eight-kilometre run, but there will be one- and two-km kids races.

And, AIK will be taking registrations for a new race, with a new course and new distances, to replace the 8-km.

AIK organizer Eric Muller said his group hopes to retain or expand on the 100 children who run on Canada Day each year, and add more runners to the new Oktoberfast race on Oct. 2, which will include 5-km and 10-km courses.

He hopes to have more runners on a different day, when people are celebrating Canada Day.

“We’re always hoping to help the charity more,” he said.

AIK has already donated $181,500 to support families hit by childhood cancer.

Friday’s festivities will have live music and children’s activities including a bicycle rodeo, arts and crafts and a watermelon eating contest.

The official ceremony will include a colour party of RCMP, fire fighters and Scouts, and there will be drumming and a blessing by the Katzie First Nation, all leading to a big birthday cake.
