Celebrate this Valentine’s day showering love on nature with ARMS

Alouette River Management Society (ARMS) is gearing up to host its first ever Valentine’s day-themed clean-up event this year.

According to Alex Holmes of the society, this is the first event with a specific Valentine’s theme in recent years.

“With the last few years (and months) we have not been able to hold consistent events. We are excited to be hosting two events this month, in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge and spread a little cheer and love while we do it!” she said.

The Adopt-A-Program clean-up will be held in Shoreline Park on Feb. 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. and at the Maple Ridge Park on Feb. 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. The events would also include a themed-activity for participants. Participants will be able to make little bird seed heart ornaments at an activity station set up by the society, to take home. These are designed for local, active species in mind, and would leave no trace once the birds have finished snacking away.

“We wanted to add a festive activity to the events and provide an environmental aspect to it. These ornaments are made from suet that can be molded. We will provide biodegradable string to hang them to take home. These ornaments provide a nice source of energy for small birds native to the area and no mess fuss clean up afterwards,” said Holmes.

So far this year, the organization has hosted one event, which was a clean-up at the ALLCO Park for Adopt-A-Block on Jan. 21.

“We had a successful day in the park, clearing the debris washed ashore, and things buried from previous visitors-including mattress springs, and what looked to be a part of a television or radiator,” said Holmes.
