The fifth annual Whonnock Giant Pumpkin Contest takes place this weekend.

Free hot chocolate will be available or coffee, in addition to a cookie treat to enjoy as guests wander around the pumpkins entered in the competition.

Guests will also be able to take their best guess at what each pumpkin weighs to win a prize.

Participants can also enter the biggest zucchini or the “coolest other gourd.”

Pumpkins to be entered in the contest need to be dropped off before the event begins.

“For safety reasons we have implemented a HARD cut off time of 12:30 for all pumpkins,” explained co-organizer Pascale Shaw online.

Competitors bringing pumpkins that can be walked or rolled to the site need to drop them off between noon and 12:30 p.m. and those that need to drive their pumpkins in need to arrive between 11 a.m. and noon.

Family pictures taken by a professional photographer in a photo booth in front of scenic Whonnock lake are also being offered.

Trevor Halliday has won the contest four years in a row and is ready for some competition this year. Last year there were 38 entries and Halliday’s winning entry weighed 630 kilograms, or 1,388 pounds.

Anyone needing help to get their pumpkin to the event can contact organizer Joanne Halliday by sending her an online message.

Everyone is welcome to the Whonnock Giant Pumpkin Contest starting at 1 p.m. – with pumpkin weight guessing – and runs until 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15, at Whonnock Lake, 276th Street and 113th Avenue in Maple Ridge.
