A Maple Ridge artist is celebrating her first solo exhibition entitled DAMES – Women With Stories.

Raeanne Schachter describes her collection is “a succession of mysterious, glamorous, yet somewhat dishevelled ladies”.

Dames – Women With Stories, my first solo exhibition, expresses how events, encounters and experiences – the good, the bad and the boring – shape how we think, what we feel and say,” explained Schachter.

“As the series progressed, attributes emerged including enhanced commentary about character,” she added.

Each piece in the series was done using a variety of processes including acrylics, collage and poetry.

Schachter grew up in Alberta and enrolled in a visual arts program in high school, where, she says, she learned about the importance of light.

She completed the Photographic Arts program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology then moved to Toronto to apprentice under some of Canada’s leading commercial photographers. There she worked as a photo editor for Music Express Magazine and then moved to the West Coast where she worked with Canadian artists including Spirit of The West, k.d. lang, and Jann Arden providing business management, photography and touring support.

Schachter also coordinated the music for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics, in addition to photo-documenting the ceremonies for the International Olympic Committee.

Following the Olympics she became a food photographer.

Since a 2018 art tour and workshop while in France Schachter has been studying painting under local artist Shari Pratt and exploring fine art photography.

In 2020 she won the Crystal Award of Merit from Gallery Ring for an abstract photograph she took while cycling through Cuba.

Schachter has had her work previously shown at The Fort Gallery in Langley and at The ACT Gallery in Maple Ridge.

Currently Schachter works out of her studio in Maple Ridge and is represented by Kizmit Gallery

in Fort Langley.
