Nominations now open for Maple Ridge Climate Champions

Awards will be presented at the Maple Ridge Earth Day festival on Saturday, April 20

Nominations are now open for the third annual 2024 Climate Champion Awards.

A nominee must live in Maple Ridge, they could be an individual, or business, or organization, and could include anyone from: a teacher who teaches their students about the effects of climate change and how to play a role in combating it; to an innovative architect who builds highly efficient structures; a builder who goes out of their way to make sure they recycle materials after demolition; a person who advocates for safe cycling and walking routes, or who cycles everywhere by choice; a sustainability-focused business that tries to reduce their emissions through purchasing, operations or delivery; a person who is attempting to make the mass transit system better with more frequent buses or train, or someone who is reducing their carbon footprint or who reduces emissions through home energy retrofits, food choices or efforts to reduce waste.

Last years winners, Deepa and Rick Hislop, reclaimed a house that was headed for a landfill.

Other winners included: Carla Van Der Pauw, Gerry Pinel, the Intergenerational Garden, Perk Eco, The Tyler Lewis Clean Energy Research Foundation, with an honourable mention to the Sunflower Cafe and Yellow House Farm.

The awards are put on by the Maple Ridge Climate Hub – a group formed in 2019, which became a registered non-profit society in 2022, and whose mission is to help residents of Maple Ridge understand the causes of climate change and help them shift to a low-carbon economy by public communication and education, community activities, and supporting policy changes at all levels of government.

Nominations close Sunday, April 7.

Winners will be celebrated at the Maple Ridge Earth Day celebration from 10-2 p.m. in Memorial Peace Park on Saturday, April 20.
