Students at Edith McDermott elementary are raising money for children in Nepal by helping out at home.

The fundraiser, called Chores for a Cause, was the idea of Helen Donnelly, education assistant at the Pitt Meadows school.

In April, Donnelly will be traveling to Lumbini with a friend and decided to volunteer her time with the Kiwanis Club while there.

Then she decided to raise money through the school in order to purchase shoes, backpacks and school supplies for the children in Nepal.

Students are doing chores at home and bringing in donations for the fundraiser.

“It’s not like selling raffle tickets or anything like that where you feel you have to buy something. This is a service for your family and parents are so happy,” said Donnelly.

Students in her class have held an assembly and created a display in the front foyer of the school.

So far the fundraiser has raised $300 for the project and will end the week after spring break.

‘It’s bringing so much joy. And that’s what I wanted to show these kids that the joy of giving is so incredible,” said Donnelly.
