Seniors have been instrumental in building the communities we live in and enjoy.

That’s why during the first week of June, we will be celebrating and honouring their many contributions to our society.

BC Seniors Week takes place June 2-8 this year and there will be many events taking place across Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

“The first full week of June marks the week that we celebrate the incredible contributions of seniors as well as showcasing how vibrant life can be when you are a senior in our two communities,” said Maria Perretta, executive director of the Ridge Meadows Seniors Society.

“Our events coordinator Katie, has been busy planning some truly fun events for the 55+ community,” she added.

On Tuesday, June 4, from 10 a.m. until noon there will be a Fit for Life at the society’s Maple Ridge Seniors Activity Centre. Perretta noted that if you can remember sports day as a kid, then this will be equally as fun.

The free two hour event will include a bean bag toss, an egg relay, walker races, and a free bagged lunch. Awards will also be handed out in all of the events. To RSVP call 604-467-4993.

On Wednesday, June 5, at 2 p.m. the seniors theatrical group, Variety Plus, will be bringing their production to the big screen. Variety Plus @ the Movies will take place at the society’s Maple Ridge Seniors Activity Centre, and will feature a recording of their latest sold out production, a nostalgic tribute to retro TV called ‘Those Were The Days’.

“What a great job the Variety Plus players have done entertaining is May,” said Perretta. “Here is your chance to bring a friend who missed out. “

Reserve your seat by calling 604-467-4993 and pay $5 at the door.

The annual Strawberry Tea at the society’s Pitt Meadows Seniors Activity Centre will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 6. The event will feature special guests, including City of Pitt Meadows Mayor Nicole MacDonald and members of city council, door prizes, a 50/50, and strawberry shortcake! Tickets can be purchased for $6 at the Pitt Meadows centre.

Nothing says ‘good time’ like a shredding event! Here’s a chance to clear the clutter of papers in your home and join in a fundraising shredding event in the parking lot of the Maple Ridge Seniors Activity Centre from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, June 8. The minimum donation is $10.
