A general duty officer with the Ridge Meadows RCMP helps return stolen bike in a Vancouver Police investigation.
Cst. Ouellette was performing regular patrols at 10:50 a.m. on Aug. 7 in the area of 223 Street and St. Anne Avenue when he spotted three expensive bikes left unattended and unlocked.
Unable to locate anyone who could prove ownership of the bicycles he seized them for further investigation.
Through a check of serial numbers he was able to link one of the bikes, a Giant Anthem worth $4,000 to a November 2017 robbery of a bicycle from a garage break-in in Vancouver.
“Without being able to prove ownership we are very limited in our enforcement actions. In this case the owner assisted police by providing a serial number and it paid off. He’s pretty happy to get his bike back,” said Sergeant Brenda Gresiuk in a press release.
“Police frequently check property suspected as being stolen and rely on serial numbers, pictures or unique identifiable markings to be able to advance an investigation or return property to the rightful owners. Unfortunately no serial numbers from the other two bikes were on record and they remain under investigation,” she said.
The Ridge Meadows RCMP is hosting a free bike registration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 18 at 21626 Lougheed Hwy. in Maple Ridge.
