The new superintendent of schools in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows attached a letter of warning from Fraser Health in her spring break message and said she is looking forward to the work ahead of her after being in the role for only three weeks now.

The letter of warning was about making sure measles vaccinations are up to date prior to any travelling during the two week holiday period.

“Measles is a contagious, airborne virus. There is a high risk of measles cases being brought back to B.C. due to ongoing measles outbreaks globally and decreasing vaccination coverage rates in Canada,” explained Fraser Health, noting that the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Provincial Health Officer and the BC Centre for Disease Control are advising individuals to check their measles immunization records and to vaccinate against virus prior to spring beak travel.

Vaccine appointments, the message advised, can be booked through local public health units.

Aside from measles vaccines, SD42 superintendent Teresa Downs said she has spent the first three weeks on the job, visiting schools and meeting with staff, students, and families.

In her letter, Downs noted the vision of the school district which is for every individual to feel valued and for all learners to reach their potential.

“Since I began my new role on February 26, I have seen these values reflected everywhere I look: in schools, in classrooms, in hallways, in discussions about the future, and in the recently released 2022/23 completion rates,” noted Downs.

“I have seen firsthand the care with which staff across the district support students and their learning and I am so appreciative to be part of this great team,” she said.

Downs wished everyone a relaxing spring break.

“I hope you are able to take some time to relax from the daily routine of school, spend time together with your child and enjoy the natural beauty of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. I know I am looking forward to exploring the many parks and trails in both communities.”
