VIDEO: It was a good year for pumpkins, say Maple Ridge growers

There is still time to pick out pumpkins at the Laity Pumpkin Patch

A 1927 Ford truck sits under a canopy, surrounded by pumpkins at the south Laity Pumpkin Patch.

The made-in-Vancouver classic vehicle is a new addition to the display this year.

“All the grandpas enjoy looking at it when they come here,” said Ken Laity, who runs the patch with his wife, Tania.

The couple are always adding to the south patch whether it be to the obstacle course or the games area for the children.

This year, there is a new climb-through tunnel and net and more trampolines. To the Glow in the Dark barn where they added singing pumpkins.

Zoë Vicencio, six, was having a blast at the south pumpkin patch recently, after visiting the north pumpkin patch the week before.

While searching for the perfect pumpkin, Zoë shared, she is partial to white pumpkins, the bigger the better. However, she was only allowed to pick one that she could carry.

“This has been by far the best year for pumpkins here,” said Ken – crediting the “Haney clay” for the moisture that helped the gourds grow.

The pumpkins are healthy, with not a lot of rot, added Tania.

About 70 per cent of the patch is dedicated to large pumpkins, at least 20 pounds in size. Then there is a two acre field for the school groups where they are able to pick a perfect five pounder.

The north pumpkin patch is geared towards children six years and younger while the south patch is for those who are older.

Until the end of this week the north patch, at 21145 128 Ave., Maple Ridge, is open from 12 to 5 p.m., and then from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the weekend, Oct. 30, and and then on Halloween, Tuesday, Oct. 31.

The south patch, at 12725 Laity St., Maple Ridge, is also open from 12 to 5 p.m. until Friday, then 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, from 12 to 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, and then they are closed Tuesday, Oct. 31.
