Canada’s Ballet Jörgen will be at the ACT on Thursday performing the classic ballet Sleeping Beauty.
Originally written by both Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm, the fairy tale tells the story of a princess who is cursed by an evil fairy to prick her finger on a spindle and die. But after a good fairy is able to partially undue the curse, the princess is doomed to fall into a deep sleep until she is awakened by the kiss of a prince.
The story of Sleeping Beauty has staying power because it is really an allegory about nature and the four seasons, explains Bengt Jörgen, artistic director and producer of Ballet Jörgen Canada.
“When Sleeping Beauty’s finger gets pricked, the world falls asleep, so that’s winter. And when the prince comes and cuts through the thorns, spring is coming, and when (Sleeping Beauty) wakes up, summer returns and its all lush and green and warm,” said Jörgen.
One of the show’s dancers will be Maple Ridge’s Erik Bruendl, who has signed on for the tour which will end April 24.
