Ridge Meadows South Asian Cultural Society is once again hosting a Diwali celebration in Maple Ridge this year.

The traditional festival of lights will be marked by an event at the Maple Ridge Public Library on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance, says the society. It is one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, and it is viewed as the best time to start a new initiative.

The celebrations generally last five days.

In the past, the library celebration has featured traditional Indian costumes, food samples, crafts, music and dancing, and more.

“This is all about acknowledging the importance of this day and educating others on it,” librarian Margarita Fernandes said at the 2022 event.

The cultural society is a non-profit that celebrates diversity and culture, and whose members have donated to numerous causes over the years, including the Ridge Meadows Hospital, Cythera House, hospice society, food bank, and more.
