BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) was in the Mission area to train on Monday (April 8).

Crew members conducted a field training day northwest of Rolley Lake Provincial Park that included a live fire exercise to practice responding to new wildfires.

“This training involves setting a fire in a strictly controlled environment, then putting it out with crews and equipment who are staged in the area in advance,” BC Wildfire Service said.

The exercise was completed by approximately 1 p.m. and BCWS says the day was a success.

“It provided excellent training opportunities for the crew leaders and firefighters met all their objectives in relation to the training goals that were set for the day,” BCWS said in a statement.

BCWS says the training is an important opportunity for new crew leaders of Initial Attack Crews and Unit Crews to participate in live firefighting activities such as hose work, building control lines and extinguishing hot spots.

“This provides critical hands-on experience and is a key element to training the next generation of firefighters while also providing an atmosphere of comradery and cooperation,” BCWS said.
