It’s spring cleanup time for not only local homeowners, but for the cities as well, with Maple Ridge preparing to host its annual Sparkle Week event.

Jeff Baker, City of Maple Ridge business retention and expansion advisor, explained that this is an initiative between the city and the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association (DMRBIA) that attempts to make the community look its best in time for the warm summer weather.

“It helps to build the pride of place and pride of ownership that form a foundation for the downtown community,” said Baker. “It shows people – residents and businesses alike – care about the community and are willing to step up for it.”

While the full initiative lasts an entire week, the bulk of the efforts will be concentrated into a single day, which is called Sparkle Week Blitz Day.

Baker explained that DMRBIA members and representatives of other organizations will gather in the downtown core to help pick up litter, report graffiti, and do other various cleanup efforts.

Blitz Day will take place on Wednesday, April 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The City of Maple Ridge and the DMRBIA encourage local businesses and property owners to participate in Sparkle Week by washing windows, replacing lightbulbs, adding greenery, sweeping sidewalks, and more.

Sparkle Week will last from April 15 to 19.
